Improved Oral Hygiene with Prebiotics

As with gut and skin health, prebiotics can influence the mouth’s microbiome and can have a positive effect on oral hygiene. The mouth’s microbiome is different than that of the skin but the importance of balancing the microorganisms remains key for an optimized environment.

There are over 700 species of microorganisms in the mouth, all which function when balanced in protecting the oral cavity. Streptococcus salivarius is the most robust of them all, comprising 30-50% of the organisms and helping to protect and regulate others. Oral microorganisms eat minerals, glycolipids and nitrate rich saliva, as well as glucose. Organisms S. mutans and S. sanguis of the mouth consume glucose and if glucose is in abundance, they transform it to dextrin, creating a film over the teeth. This biofilm shields the S. salivarius from protecting others, allowing organisms such as lactobacillus to flourish and contribute to the transformation of glucose to lactic acid, a root cause for imbalance and cavities.

preBIULIN ORAL

preBIULIN ORAL is an inulin-based prebiotic with a low MW and short chain length ideally suited for oral care. Microorganisms of the mouth can metabolize this smaller chain length easily and quickly, allowing the prebiotic’s functionality to be enhanced in a short time.

In Vitro Studies

An in vitro study was performed to determine how quickly the mouth’s protective organism, S. salivarius, grows in the presence of the low MW and short chain length preBIULIN ORAL verses other longer chain length polysaccharides.

Results can be seen below.

Conclusion: The shorter chain length of preBIULIN ORAL is easier for the S. salivarius to digest, allowing for faster growth of this protective organism of the mouth.

In Vivo with Alcohol Rinse

An In vivo study was performed to demonstrate the effect preBIULIN ORAL has on the specific protective organism of the mouth, S. salivarius, as well as the oral microbiome.

Conclusion: Ethanol alone disturbed 46% of S. salivarius. When in combination with 2% preBIULIN ORAL there was little impact on this organism. Ethanol alone disturbed 75% of the mouth’s overall species, compared to 57% when combined with preBIULIN ORAL. The higher percent of organisms disturbed indicates there is a decrease in the mouth’s protection against the entry of new organisms.

In Vivo with Sugar Rinse

An In vivo study was performed to demonstrate the effect preBIULIN ORAL has the bacteria responsible for cavities, and the oral microbiome

Conclusion: The mouthwash with ethanol alone after a sugar water rinse disturbed 91% of the mouth’s microbiome, compared to no disturbance when in combination preBIULIN ORAL. The higher percent of organisms disturbed indicates there is a decrease in the mouth’s protection against the entry of new organisms. The mouthwash with ethanol alone after a sugar water rinse increased cavity causing bacteria by 16% where the addition of preBIULIN ORAL decreased these organisms by 10%.

In Vivo with a Soda (low ph) Wash

An In vivo study was performed to demonstrate the effect preBIULIN ORAL has the bacteria responsible for cavities, and the oral microbiome.

Conclusion: The mouthwash with ethanol alone after a soda rinse disturbed 61% of the mouth’s microbiome compared to 35% when in combination with preBIULIN ORAL. The higher percent of organisms disturbed indicates there is a decrease in the mouth’s protection against the entry of new organisms. The mouthwash with ethanol alone after a soda rinse increased cavity causing bacteria substantially by 57% where the addition of preBIULIN ORAL had no impact on these organisms.
